Welcome members, prospective members &
friends!
As we enter our 43rd year, we can reflect on how far we have
come
and to where we are going; starting with a little parade known only to
the Pawtuxet
community to becoming one of the top celebrations of its type in the
country.
We continue to educate the public of Rhode Island's
major role in the American Revolution; the first blow for freedom was
here- not
in Boston,
an
open defiance not disguised as someone else. The events taking place
around the
world today, show us how very important those early steps on the path
to
freedom really were.
The
Gaspee Days Committee is a volunteer organization and, as such, is
dependent on
both our present members and the new members we have yet to meet. It
takes a
full year of planning, hard work and dedication to put on the six week
celebration known as Gaspee Days. With each passing year we find
we need
more of two things – members and money. In regards to membership,
it’s not
just about attracting new members but about keeping them, supporting
them, and
encouraging them to become more involved. For additional funding we
will be
having a number of smaller and less expensive fundraisers, and we will
also be applying
for grants.
In
closing I learned a very valuable lesson from my cat Bandit in his
fight with
kidney disease – with love, loyalty, respect, and determination all
things are possible. Come join us and help make the Gaspee Days
celebration a
continuing reminder of the roles our state and communities played in
the fight
for freedom.
